The School was first established to educate the choristers of the worshipping community of Ely, and throughout our history we have maintained strong links with Ely Cathedral. In 1541, King Henry VIII founded a College of Canons at Ely Cathedral to replace the monks whose monastery had been dissolved in 1539 and the school received its Royal Charter, later becoming known as "The King's School". In 1970, King’s Ely became co-educational and in 1973, Queen Elizabeth II visited the school and instituted the first Queen’s Scholars.Today, King's Ely educates around 1,150 boys and girls aged 2 to 18, including around 200 boarders.
Our Alumni, also known as Old Eleans, are a wonderful community of people that have gone on to do a variety of things and what stands out most about King's is the willingness to help others. This site is for everyone that has been part of the school community over the years, be that students, parents, staff or friends.
At the Development & Alumni Office, our aim is to secure the future of the school while celebrating those that have come before. Please do get in touch with us to tell us about your experience here, we love nothing more than chatting all things King's.
