King’s Ely can trace its origins back to at least 970 AD, making it one of the oldest schools in England. In 1541, Henry VIII granted the School its Royal Charter, endowed the first King’s Scholars and gave it the status of The King’s School, Ely.
Throughout its history, King’s Ely has been shaped by its people and community. Generations of pupils, parents and caregivers, teachers, staff, choristers and friends have all played their part in making the School what it is today.
King’s Ely and Ely Cathedral remain closely connected, continuing a relationship stretching back more than a thousand years.
Today, King’s Ely is a vibrant community of around 1,150 pupils aged 2 to 18. While much has changed over the centuries, that sense of community remains at its heart.
Friends of King’s Ely celebrates and strengthens these lifelong connections, bringing together our past, present and future community.
