The fundraising concert was organised by Old Eleans Felix Hawes and Tristan Harding, who both left King’s in 2019. They were joined by fellow Old Eleans and members of King’s staff, with every performer generously giving their time without charge.

The singers included Sam Barber (OE 2022 and former Choral Scholar), Tom Scott (OE 2019), Tristan Harding (OE 2019, former Choral Scholar and Chorister), Maria Campbell (OE 2019 and former Chorister), Helen Briggs and Paula Downes-Trippett. Maria travelled from London especially to take part, while Sarah MacDonald helped to provide the music for the evening.

Behind the scenes, Felix’s parents, Marc and Melodie, both members of King’s staff, provided teas and coffees. Marc is also an Old Elean. Felix concentrated on organising the concert alongside Tristan and now works as a secondary school teacher at Chesterton Community College.

For Felix, the appeal has particular personal significance. He has served as Churchwarden of St Laurence since April 2026, and nine generations of his family, including Felix himself, have been baptised there.

The oldest parts of St Laurence date from the late twelfth century, and the church has served the Wicken community for generations. It is also the burial place of Henry Cromwell, son of Oliver Cromwell, and Henry’s wife, Elizabeth.

The necessary roof repairs are expected to cost £215,000. More than £31,000 had already been raised before the £711.50 generated by the concert was added, bringing the total secured so far to more than £32,000.

The evening was a wonderful example of the lasting legacy of music at King’s Ely, bringing Old Eleans and staff together to share their time and talents in support of the wider community.
