On Friday 29 May, King's Ely welcomed more than 70 Old Eleans and their guests back to school for the inaugural Half Century Club Afternoon Tea.
Created for those who left King's Ely fifty years ago or more, the event brought together former pupils spanning almost two decades, with years represented from 1958 through to 1976. For some, it was their first visit back to Ely in many years, while others arrived alongside friends, spouses, children and grandchildren to share a place that had played such an important role in their lives.
Guests gathered in the Hayward Theatre for afternoon tea and conversation, where old friendships were quickly rekindled and new connections formed. Throughout the afternoon, memories flowed as freely as the tea, with stories shared of houses, teachers, sporting triumphs, school traditions and lives lived far beyond the gates of King's.
Following afternoon tea, guests were invited to revisit parts of the school. Tours of School House, the Monastic Barn, Walsingham House and other familiar locations proved particularly popular, allowing many to walk once again through places that held decades of memories.
The school archives also attracted considerable interest. Guests brought photographs, magazines, exercise books and other treasures from their time at King's, helping to preserve and enrich the school's history for future generations.
One attendee described the day as:
A huge success. I thoroughly enjoyed it in every way, particularly in meeting old friends and contemporaries.
Another wrote afterwards:
What a really wonderful day. Thank you so much.
Perhaps most moving was the opportunity to see friendships renewed after many decades apart. The room was filled with conversation, laughter and a shared sense of belonging. As one guest reflected:
It was great fun and a wonderful opportunity to meet a handful of long-lost chums.
The event would not have been possible without the support of colleagues, volunteers and fellow Old Eleans who helped welcome guests throughout the afternoon, listened to stories, shared memories and ensured everyone felt at home.
For many attendees, the occasion was about more than simply returning to school. It was an opportunity to reconnect with friends, revisit cherished places and reflect on the experiences that helped shape their lives.
The overwhelming response to the event demonstrated the enduring strength of the Old Elean community and the affection so many continue to hold for King's Ely decades after leaving.
We are delighted that so many were able to join us and look forward to welcoming even more members of the Half Century Club back to King's Ely in the years to come.
